Make an effort not to be a boring expat

If you are still stuck in doing what you think an expat should do, then you may have a friend in this lady.

She goes to Bar Rouge and the Peninsula hotel.

She walks a dog around the former French Concession.

She shops at the ‘avocado lady’.

She makes silly and whimsical poses for photos by the Pudong skyline.

She mentions – completely unnecessarily – how many years she has been in China. Good for her.

She says that she finds it annoying when people ask her what her job is or why she is in Shanghai.

She is, dear readers, a walking cliche and you should ensure that you are not being led down the avenue of being the same dull person who visits the same dull restaurants, bars and streets, while still maintaining a belief that you are somehow special and different.

Give her thanks because she has demonstrated, to us all, the kind of person we should strive to not become. Amen to that.

Strive to have something more in your life than brunch, a pet, and evenings at the same places each week to define you as a human being.

Hehe, probably something like “oh I have just been hanging round with my Chinese friends this month”, casually dropped into conversation. 🙂
